Therefore, the emphasis is on philology, but technical disciplines and information technology are also mastered at the same time. Because modern printing is inextricably linked with them. But by choosing an advertising niche or journalistic activity, or opening his own publishing house, a graduate significantly raises this bar for himself.

Advantages of Master's Degree Studies

If there is an opportunity to continue education, the profession can become a lifelong endeavor that will bring a stable high income. Master's studies are inextricably linked with practice, and this increases the graduate's status in the eyes of a potential employer. Not to mention the fact that many students find decent employment during their practical classes.

A graduate with a master's degree can safely teach at a university. He will already be able to cope with leadership positions in organizations and institutions of various types. For example, this could be the position of administrator, project manager.

The profession of a book publisher is no longer described by the word “printer”. A book publisher is not someone who prints books, that is, takes a manuscript and “throws” it into a printing press, and the circulation comes out the other end. It was like this for quite a long time, but it stopped being like that.

Now the publisher is the one who brings the book to the market, creates and maintains demand for it. In exactly the same way, I note in parentheses, the author’s profession has changed: the author is not the one who wrote the book. This is the one who wrote the book and presented it to society - this is part of the profession.

The publishing business involves training a specialist who is not only a bibliophile, but understands the market, has a huge outlook, qualities and knowledge of a manager. And at the same time, it focuses not only on literal material profit.

After all, there are things whose value we understand later. Remember, from Tsvetaeva: “My poems, like precious wines, will have their turn...” The same can be said about books.

Personal qualities

The necessary personal qualities and abilities of a publisher include sociability, ease of communication, resistance to stress, initiative, tact, perseverance, vision and logical thinking, the ability to negotiate with people of different temperaments and social status.

If a publisher does not like to communicate with people, then this profession is not suitable for him, since constant fatigue and stress from communicating with other people will interfere with making effective decisions as a manager.

Education (What do you need to know?)

Students study literature, modern printing, history of book publishing, book art, design, marketing, printing technology, and economic disciplines.

Place of work and career

The publisher can be found in a large publishing house, which has several areas of work. For example, classical, popular science or children's literature. Each of them is led by a separate project manager who knows exactly this sector - monitors the activities of competitors and is always aware of new products.

Another segment of the publishing market is the press, where the publisher acts as the head of a separate publication or line of newspapers and magazines, united by thematic or some other principle.
Internet: website owners are also publishers.

An editor is one of the best options that can satisfy the ambitions of humanities scholars. But what do you need to know about this position in order to prepare yourself for professional responsibilities in advance? What skills do you need to learn during your studies? And how to build your career then?

Let's start with the fact that this is a very responsible profession. An editor is a specialist responsible for preparing material for publication. That is, he will be the one who will get hit in the face if the final version of the article contains errors or false information. Therefore, the editor, like a kindergarten teacher, tirelessly ensures that his charges skillfully do their work.

It should also be noted that there may be several specialists in the same publication. Thus, the editor-in-chief is responsible for creating the basic concept, selecting topics for articles and authors. But the art editor deals exclusively with page design, improves the quality of photographs and color design of the magazine.

Editor classification

Given the above, let's look at what types of editors exist. After all, thanks to this information, the future specialist will be able to decide on a specific direction and focus on mastering it.

So, today we know about the following types of profession:

  • art editor;
  • scientific editor;
  • technical editor;
  • broadcast editor;
  • literary editor.

You should also be warned that each direction has its own characteristics. Because of this, it can be quite difficult to move from one category to another.

Where can I study?

This specialty requires a higher education. Moreover, the closer it is to the specifics of the profession, the greater the chances of getting such a coveted position. Therefore, if a person is not satisfied with the editorial office of the newspaper, he is counting on something more, then he needs to master one of the following specialties:

  • editing;
  • publishing;
  • literary creativity;
  • philology;
  • journalism;
  • linguistics.

Fortunately, most Russian universities have such departments. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about the fact that you will definitely have to go to the capital to get an editor’s education.

What qualities should a good specialist have?

Alas, this profession is not suitable for everyone. An editor is a position that requires certain qualities, without which success cannot be achieved here. Let's look at them in more detail.

Responsibility comes first. Whether he is an editor-in-chief or an ordinary one, he must be able to “keep in check” both his wards and himself. After all, he is the person who is responsible for the quality of the material and the project as a whole.

So it makes sense that an editor should have excellent organizational skills. Only in this way will he be able to create the atmosphere necessary for work and correctly distribute responsibilities among his subordinates. In addition, he will have to constantly push his colleagues to improve themselves, otherwise they will not be able to grow professionally.

And, of course, endurance. The editor can’t do without it, especially before submitting a project. At the same time, you need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to get tired both physically and psychologically. Mountains of untested material, lack of sleep, responsibility for the results of the entire team's work... And that's not all.

Main responsibilities of the editor

Naturally, it is impossible to predict the entire range of responsibilities, since this is a very multifaceted profession. A magazine editor, for example, is busier than a specialist working for a small newspaper. Therefore, you will have to limit yourself to only the basic functions of the profession, without going deeper.

So what does an editor do?

He creates the main document down to the titles of the articles, issues the assignment to the authors and indicates the due date, and controls it. Analyzes the material received from writers and decides its future fate. If necessary, returns articles for revision, while pointing out errors or inaccuracies. Checks the quality of printed material and makes corrections.

In addition, the editor can participate in all stages of writing articles. He can also train authors and, if necessary, send them for advanced training. If we talk about the editor-in-chief, then his responsibilities are even broader. Therefore, large publications often have a whole group of specialists who are distributed throughout the organization, and each is responsible for their own area of work.

A newspaper office is the ideal place to start any editor's career. Firstly, here you can gain invaluable work experience, and secondly, getting a job here is much easier than in a glossy magazine. Otherwise, when looking for a job, you need to build on the available vacancies and the requirements for them.

You should also remember that at first you can work as a freelancer. Thus, many electronic publications are recruiting editors who are ready to perform their duties remotely. Overall, this is a good chance for those who live in a small city with limited opportunities.

Pay and competition

Editor is a profession in which the salary largely depends on the place of work. So, in small newspapers these specialists receive no more than 20-25 thousand rubles. But popular publications offer amounts much higher. For example, the average salary in Moscow ranges from 40-50 thousand rubles.

Now about the competition. While it is quite easy to get a job in small newspapers and electronic publications, getting into more prestigious places is much more difficult. Firstly, all ambitious specialists strive to settle there, and secondly, companies themselves often intensify the competition for vacant positions. And yet, having a good store of knowledge and self-confidence, the editor will never be left without a piece of bread.

“There are three of the most corrupt professions in the world, and I didn’t think my daughter would choose one of them!” - Dad said when he heard that I wanted to become a journalist. And everyone else at home was also in slight shock. After all, all my life I was going to go to medical school, and then suddenly.

They persuaded, or rather, dissuaded me from the decision made long and persistently, but their success was almost zero. In the end, I still entered the journalism department, only with a specialty in Publishing. What does it change? At first it seemed like a lot to me.

After all, who is a publisher? This is a person or organization that has the right to publish or has received a license. In any case, I heard this definition of my future profession back in my first year (now I have already reached the 3rd year).

And, for example, in Ozhegov’s explanatory dictionary it is said even more simply: “A publisher is the one who publishes a printed work.” It couldn't be clearer. But - stop! Did I dream about this? And in general, what does a journalist have in common with a publisher?

Has my dream of becoming a tribune of truth and justice sunk into oblivion? Or, better said, covered herself with a copper basin?

I was terribly upset. Especially when I visited the publishing house and printing house a couple of times. Just mortal boredom! You sit all day and edit materials written by someone else’s pen, while you could do it yourself... Eh! You can also talk in the publishing house only in a whisper and only when absolutely necessary. Full concentration and attention is required. God forbid you make a mistake!

And in the printing house it’s even worse. You breathe paint all day long, gluing book bindings. You prepare products for printing and release them into the world. It’s hard, but at least talking is not prohibited. Any topics please. As long as it doesn't interfere with work...

In general, I had seen enough of all the delights of my future profession and decided to urgently transfer to my cherished specialty - journalism. I will not describe my painful thoughts on the topic “to be or not to be.” It's unlikely that anyone will be interested in this. But now I am already a 3rd year student at the Faculty of Journalism, majoring in Publishing.

Why didn't you transfer? Well, firstly, I realized that you can become a journalist without a special diploma. If you really want to. Secondly, I finally saw the merits in the profession of publisher and editor. There turned out to be quite a few of them: if you are an editor or publisher, no one forbids you to become a shark of the pen. There would be a desire! This specialty gives you several professions at once: publisher, editor, journalist, web designer and even translator. Just choose! When you learn to edit other people's mistakes, you begin to see your own better. You improve yourself, that is.

In general, I learned to respect my profession. And it does not at all interfere with the fulfillment of my dreams.

Discussion

You only need to study at the Faculty of Journalism in absentia, and during this time you work, work, and again...
I’ve seen such writers who write an article for a month... While I write them in a week, it’s scary to say in what quantity.
As a result, I had no problems with my diploma. By the way, those who study at the publishing house undergo internship in our editorial office. There's no way beyond an incompetent proofreader :) An absolute waste of time.

Hello, dear author! I haven’t spoken out for a long time - I haven’t had time to think about everything.
I graduated from law school, although already in the 1st year I understood that it was not for me. But then I didn’t yet know what was mine. In the 5th course I understood: journalism. Now I constantly collaborate with two publications and periodically with another. As the column editor in one of them told me, everyone has unsuccessful articles, and there is no need to make a tragedy out of it and consider yourself mediocrity. It is necessary to draw conclusions and write in accordance with them in the future.

I return to the article. Unfortunately, she cannot be named
good.
1. The topic of your parents’ attitude towards your future profession at the moment has not been disclosed.
2. It is not clear why you didn’t enroll in the “journalism” major - either you couldn’t pass the exams, or there weren’t enough publications for the creative competition, or at some point you wavered and immediately applied for “publishing.”
3. “Painful thoughts on the topic “to be or not to be”, “to be translated or not” would still be better described. This is interesting. This is really important, this is precisely the personal experience that is worth sharing with others. You are in vain they kept silent about this.
4. You need more details about why you stayed to study to become a publisher. The thesis “you can become a journalist with any diploma” had to be supported either by your own observations (well, maybe even modest, but still experience in journalistic work), or by logical arguments. The same goes for the benefits of being an editor.
Without this (alas, but these ladies are right), the article really looks like a 9th grade essay on the topic “who to be”: “because I want and like it!”
You also need to be able to respond correctly to criticism. If an editor makes a remark to you, will you really react in the same way: “I’m not Dostoevsky!” - A?
I note, however, that it is incorrect to compare journalism with fiction.

But the answer to the main question never came. So why does an author study publishing?

It’s clear why... by the way, it’s not very clear why a person wanted to go into journalism, but went into publishing. Didn’t get hired/didn’t get into another place (journalism)/was embarrassed because of the “venality” of the profession?

You can be a journalist doing... anything, even cleaning toilets - who could argue?

It seems to me that painful CONSIDERATIONS (i.e. THOUGHTS) on the topic “to be or not to be”, “to be translated or not to be translated” would be of interest to the reader.

By style. Are simple sentences normal? It reminds me of the school essays of a 9th grader who doesn’t like to read (I don’t want to offend, it’s just that I have just such a 9th grader in my family right now).

It seems to me that words about how an irreconcilable father now feels about his daughter’s choice would be appropriate.

Dear girl, get yourself a LiveJournal and write there. Better yet, get away from the computer and start living, gaining life experience, without which a journalist cannot exist, and it is the presence of which in the author that distinguishes a good article from another graphomaniac creation.

Girls, let's calm down. Well, the author has not yet matured into a journalist, but he will. I, too, in my first year of specializing in “print media journalism”, was told that without having a single newspaper publication by the end of high school, there was generally nothing to do in journalism. I only started writing more or less normally when I graduated from university. Now my book is coming out. But in your third year you won’t be able to write anything like that :) Not all of them are early, some only start writing after retirement.

That's it, verbiage, idle talk... Is this what a competent, real journalist should do? Not such nonsense. I wrote such notes back in the 9th grade, at a special seminar on journalism. But already in the 3rd year... What do they teach you there? What kind of university is this? Maybe you really need to transfer to the media department or whatever it is at your university? And purposefully learn to write?
